Class:        History                             Date Due: April 18th

Tuesday:        Do the Map Work for Chapter 27:

  1. Britain was an agricultural country that relied on muscle power and machines for work. Outline England and Scotland in light green.
  2. James Watt was from Scotland.  Draw a black box around the word “Scotland.”
  3. Railroads became a new way to transport the coal.  Using the following symbol, draw a railroad up the middle of Britain (England and Scotland):  +++++++++++
  4. The introduction of steam power changed Britain.  Fill in the green outline with gray.
  5. Eli Whitney made standardization popular in the United States.  Draw a small symbol for a factory.  Then, draw five of those symbols along the east coast of America.
  6. Find the I in AMERICA.  Go right until you get to the coast.  Use a brown pencil or crayon and outline the coast of America from here down.  This area was already a large cotton producer, and with the introduction of steam, became an even greater cotton producer.

Read Napoleon Comes to Power in Chapter 29 of The Story of the World.  After the first reading, give a narration to a parent.  After the narration, answer the questions in the History Notebook. (We are skipping Chapter 28 because of time constraints)

The Rosetta Stone was found in 1799 by scholars who accompanied Napoleon to Egypt.  The Rosetta Stone is a

stone with writing on it in two different languages (Egyptian and Greek), but with three different scripts.  The

different scripts were used so that the priests, government officials, and rulers of Egypt could read the stone.

People who deciphered the used Greek to figure out what the other two Egyptian scripts meant.

You have a sentence below in English.  The second sentence is in code.  Each letter corresponds with the letter in

the previous sentence.  For example, the “N” in Napoleon corresponds with the “K” in the coded sentence.  Notice

that every “N” in the English sentence is represented with a “K” in the second sentence.  Note:  That does not

mean that the “N” in the second sentence corresponds with a “K” in the English sentence.

Use the information that you have to decode the answers to the three questions about Napoleon on your own paper

(you may have to guess on a few of the letters).  This exercise is optional for 5th Graders.

English Sentence:  Napoleon sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States for

fifteen million dollars.

Coded Sentence: Ketuiruk  zuih  ncr  Iuodzdeke  Nrmmdnumq  nu  ncr

Okdnrh  Znenrz  aum  adanrrk  jdiiduk  huiiemz.

Use the above sentences to decode the answers, written in code, to these questions about

Napoleon.  Write the answers on your own paper.

Question One:  How old was Napoleon when he became a French lieutenant?

Answer one, in code:  Zdvnrrk

Question Two:  When Napoleon was in Egypt, he visited the Great Pyramid.  He asked to be

left alone in the King’s Chamber.  What other famous historical figure visited the pyramid and

spent time alone in the King’s Chamber?

Answer Two, in code:  Eirvekhrm ncr Bmren

Question Three:  Where did Napoleon make most of his battle plans?

Answer Three, in code:  Dk e zekhfuv

Wednesday:  Begin practicing the part of the poem that is about your character.  If you do not like what I have written, you may submit something new for approval.  Since I have so many “Napoleons”, you may want to think of some lines to add.  The poem will be sent to your parents’ email account.

We will use this to introduce our “historical character” for the “Night of Class” on the 26th.  Students are encouraged to be creative and bring a prop or costume for our “Living Timeline.”
