Teacher:        Brenda Lecklider                  Date Assigned: December 15th

Class:       History                             Date Due: December 17th

Tuesday:        Read William Penn’s Holy Experiment in Chapter 15 of The Story of the World. After the first reading, give a narration to a parent. After the narration, answer the questions in the History Notebook.

6th Graders (Optional for 5th Graders): One of the famous Philadelphia landmarks is the Liberty Bell. In 1751, fifty years after William Penn made up the Charter of Privileges, the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly commissioned the bell to be built. The bell was made in London and delivered to Philadelphia in 1752. Although it is only three feet high, the bell weighs over 2000 pounds! While testing the bell in Philadelphia, the bell cracked. The bell was repaired and hung in the State House. The bell is engraved with a verse from the Bible: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10.

The bell tolled for the First Continental Congress, as well as the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The bell was also rung on July 8th, 1776 after the Declaration of Independence was read to the public for the first time. When the British marched into Philadelphia, the bell was hidden in another town because people were worried the bell would be melted down for cannonballs. In 1835, back in Philadelphia, the bell cracked again when it was rung for the funeral of Chief Justice John Marshall. The bell was rung for the last time in 1846 to celebrate the birthday of George Washington. It cracked beyond repair and has not chimed a note since.
