Tuesday:               Read The Reign of Terror in Chapter 25 of The Story of the World.  After the first reading, give a narration to a parent.  After the narration, answer the questions in the History Notebook.

Do the Map Work for Chapter 25

  1. Find Versailles, the site of the meetings of “The General Assembly” and “The National Assembly.” Draw a purple circle around the dot that represents Versailles.
  2. Paris was only twelve miles from Versailles. The commoners of Paris heard of the Third Estate’s revolt and prepared to join the revolution.  Find the key on your map, and color the top box orange.  Draw an orange circle around the city of Paris.
  3. Several cities in France supported the National Assembly and the commoners of Paris in the revolution of 1789. The following were of those many cities: Marseille, Montpellier, Bordeaux, Rennes, Caen, Lyon Troyes, Amien.  Find these cities on the map and draw an orange circle around each dot that represents those cities.
  4. Find the three areas on your map that have been marked with small dashed lines. Remember that throughout the countryside, peasants revolted, invaded the mansions of the rich, and murdered the hated noblemen of the Second Estate.  Color these areas orange.
  5. Many in France, called Royalists, did not support the revolution of 1789. Find the key, and color the lower box brown.  Color the remaining area of France brown.  (Note to students:  The division between those who supported the revolution and those who did not was more complex than the map shows.  The map has been simplified for the purpose of this activity.)
